Cannabis – a growth market

Market outlook for Switzerland and Europe

The market volume in Europe for CBD for 2019 was USD 450 million (in sales).

A market volume for CBD of USD 1'600 million is expected in Europe by 2025. This corresponds to a growth of 296%.

The top 3 markets in Europe are (2019):

Germany: approx USD 100 million (market share: 24.7%)

Great Britain: approx USD 98 million (market share: 24.2%)

Switzerland: approx USD 86 million (market share: 21.2%)

The market for CBD products in the consumer sector will continue to grow strongly. If products containing THC are legalized, the market is expected to multiply ten to thirty times within a very short period of time.

The market for medical-grade cannabis (CBD and THC) will also grow strongly in the coming years. The planned legalization steps in the Swiss and European markets are designed for the use of cannabis in the medical field and in the pharmaceutical industry.

Europe expected to become the world's largest legal cannabis market within the next 5 years with USD 136 billion in value by 2028, mainly driven by the medical sector (57% of the value, or 64 billion), exceeding the U.S. Market by over 400%. Currently it can be observed using the example of the U.S. market, how the legal market is catching up strongly with the illegal market. Since cannabis containing THC was legalized in Canada and a number of U.S. States, the market volume in the legal area has skyrocketed. In the medium term, the legal market will reach resp. exceed the volume of the illegal market.

While Europe has been a major producer of cannabis in the past, Canada has taken a leading role in production since the 2000s. And China is today also one of the major producers of hemp – mainly also in the area of industrial hemp.
